GILL BRENNAN COUNSELLING
my personal approach
I realise counselling can seem expensive and that you will want our work together to be effective. We can talk about what you would like to achieve, and about the benefits to you and all your relationships which will be worth the investment.
I use an integration of models which reflect my training, personal studies, work and life experiences, and which I adapt to the unique situation and wishes of each client. These encompass a humanistic, person-centred approach (respecting your unique experiences and ability to find your way to your own solutions) alongside psychodynamic and attachment theories of development (which explore how your past relationships influence your present ways of relating). I also believe that how you are in the counselling relationship may help to inform you constructively about relationships outside the counselling room. I aim to offer a gentle, compassionate and supportive relationship to all my clients. I can use solution-focussed tools or motivational interviewing for more short-term goals.
I incorporate CBT (cognitive behavioural theory) skills and tools where they are helpful for my clients, especially in the areas of anxiety and depression.
I treat all information disclosed as confidential, following the BACP code of ethics. I receive regular supervision with a professional supervisor who also adheres to the BACP ethics in relation to client confidentiality. This supervision helps to support me in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and expertise in my work with you and is also a requirement of ethical practice according to the BACP.
